Roblox Unveils Futuristic Real-Time AI Chat Translator, Breaking Language Barriers in the Metaverse

In a move that feels like it's straight out of a sci-fi novel, Roblox has launched a new in-game text chat feature that automatically translates text from 15 languages into a player's preferred language. This real-time translation is made possible by a custom-built AI large language model (LLM) that can handle Roblox-specific slang and abbreviations like "AFK" (away from keyboard) or "obby" (obstacle course) without getting tripped up.

The company used available open source data and its own translation data to train this new chat feature.Roblox, which had over 70 million daily active users as of November 2023, plans to "double down" on generative AI tool development this year.

The company is also actively exploring automatic voice chat translations, which would allow players to receive real-time translations of other spoken voices. While this may sound like science fiction today, and it will take some time to achieve, Roblox is committed to pushing forward on translation.

This latest AI tool comes a few months after Roblox announced its AI-powered Roblox Assistant, an accessibility and creator tool that allows users to build in-game content by typing text prompts. The company also plans to evaluate its translations for quality over time and add a feedback tool.

In the future, Roblox envisions every part of a user experience on the platform to be fully translated into their native language, including offering AI-powered voice translation. This is a significant step in fostering global communication and inclusivity, making it possible for people who speak different languages to communicate seamlessly with one another in the Roblox universe
